“She was studying to become a religious teacher. She wanted to teach people the true meaning of Islam - a religion of peace, compassion, and knowledge.”
Farkhunda Malikzada was a 27-year-old Afghan woman and a student of religious studies at Kabul University. She was deeply devoted to her faith and dreamed of becoming an Islamic teacher who could share the true peaceful teachings of her religion.
On March 19, 2015, Farkhunda was brutally killed by a mob in Kabul after being falsely accused of burning a Quran. She was innocent. Investigations later proved she had done no such thing. Her death sparked unprecedented protests across Afghanistan and became a turning point for women's rights in the country.
Her courage in standing up against superstition, her dedication to education, and the injustice of her death inspired millions. Women defied tradition to carry her coffin - a powerful act of solidarity. Farkhunda's name has become a symbol of the fight for truth, justice, and education.
